Bachelor's in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering

  • 3 years · 6 semesters
  • 180 ECTS

The Bachelor's in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP), in daytime hours. It brings together engineering and the geosciences and applies them to the geotechnics of large engineering works, the management of natural resources, the use of geomaterials and geoenvironmental hazards.

The plan combines mathematics, physics, environmental chemistry and computing with Geology, Georesources, Soil Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Hydrogeology and Water Resources, Geophysical Prospecting and Drilling, Geological and Applied Mapping, Engineering Geology, Rock Mass Excavation, Construction Materials and Concrete, Processing of Mineral Raw Materials and Waste, Environmental Geotechnics and Occupational Health and Safety. It has a strong experimental component, with projects, case studies, technical visits and field and laboratory work, and the 3rd year includes two projects in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and a Road Works Project.

Graduates work in the prospecting, exploration, extraction and management of mineral georesources, oil and natural gas, hydromineral resources and groundwater; in public works, with geological and geotechnical studies, excavations, embankments, foundations and site instrumentation; in software development for geotechnics and the geoenvironment; and in the design, management and supervision of geoengineering works. At ISEP, they can apply to the Master's in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
