Descrição

Objectives

Make the engineer aware of the importance of energy to the environment and human health and in creating economic value. Provide the engineer with concepts and tools that will allow him to understand and model energy flows and to define measures and quantify their effect in reducing energy consumption and increasing environmental and economic benefits: (1) at the country scale and economic sectorial level, (2) in industrial systems, (3) in buildings, (4) in transports and (5) in complex equipments.

Syllabus

Energetic and exergetic analysis of systems. Energy and exergy efficiency. Graphic representations of energy transformations using Sankey and Grassman diagrams. Primary energy (resources), final (vectors) and useful (uses) at the national, regional and world scales. Energetic transitions in resources, vectors and uses for the last 200 years. Technological evolution. Portuguese Energetic Balance. Renewable and non-renewable energy resources: intermittence and the supply-demand dynamics of electricity. Energy, environment and human health: GHG emissions, atmospheric pollution and other environmental impacts. Energy and the economy: relationships between useful exergy, exergy efficiency and GDP. Energy use in industry, transports, buildings and legislation. Estimation of specific energy copnsumption and the impact of energy efficiency measures. Energy audits and racionalization energy plans. Case-studies.

Prerequisites

Thermodynamics.

Cross Competence Component

The team game and the work with oral presentation, willl promote the following soft skills, with a total 35%: 1) Interpersonal skills (the game and the work are in teams and the work has an oral presentation) 2) Information and media literacy (each team has to look for a current national or international piece of news about climate change) 3) Capacity to innovate and criticize (each team will have to make a critical analysis of the piece of news in the context of the knowledge acquired in the CU)

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
