Objectives

The goal for this CU is to give a long view perspective to the students so that sustainability can be thought of in a more comprehensive framework.

Syllabus

Core transversal concepts: niches, cycles, sustainability, stability, energy, entropy and information. Cosmos: Big Bang theory, nucleosynthesis, atom formation, accretion, stellar evolution and planet formation. Earth and Life: exogenous delivery of organic matter by comets and asteroids, the origins of life, evolution theory, protozoa and eukaryota, multicellularity, metabolic theory (DEB), eusociality and collective learning. Humanity and Technology: hominid evolution, Homo sapiens pre-history, agriculture, domestications, emergence of civilizations, globalization, science, illuminism, industrial revolutions, the beginning of the Anthropocene, modern technology and connectivity, strategic sustainability assessment.

Cross Competence Component

The UC allows the development of transversal competences on Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking and problem solving approaches, within the assignments and project; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (organizational and teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation skills - within the assignments and project); and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate media content - within the assignments and project).
