Objectives

- understand the difference between hazard and risk - identify the hazards associated with rock erosion as infrastructure and building - identify the hazards associated with the exploration and production of mineral and energy resources - recognize the importance of applying industry best safety practices - know how to apply preventive and risk mitigating measures

Syllabus

At UC the environmental and technological risks associated with the geological context and activities of exploration and production of mineral resources will always be addressed in two dimensions: identification of problems and application of prevention and / or mitigation measures. The list of topics to apply: - Geological hazards: volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides and blocks, coastal erosion - Risks associated with cultural heritage built in stone - Risks associated with mining activities - Risks associated with oil and gas exploration activities

Cross Competence Component

A UC permite o desenvolvimento de competências transversais em Pensamento Crítico, nomeadamente pensamento estratégico e abordagens à resolução de problemas, nas apresentações e debate; Competências interpessoais e intrapessoais (oral, organizacional e trabalho em equipa, autodisciplina, perseverança, auto-motivação); Literacia da informação e dos media (capacidade de localizar e aceder a informações, bem como para analisar e avaliar os conteúdos dos media); e ainda de cidadania global (ética e responsabilidade social e cívica na atividade de engenharia). A percentagem de avaliação associada a essas competências deverá ser da ordem dos 15%.

Laboratorial Component

The laboratory component will support the development of the project; the project's theme will be adapted to the student's curriculum plan, i.e., MEGM, MERE or other.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
