Descrição

Objectives

The student will learn the theoretial and practical components in solving mathematical equations relevant to the multi-phase fluid dynamics in porous media. At the end of the course the student will be able to describe the laws of physics related to fluid flow in this type of system and interpret and analyse the results provided by fluid simulators.

Syllabus

Basic concepts about modelling and fluid flow simulation (water, hydrocarbons and CO2) in sedimentary formations. Variables that characterize the fluid behaviour in the subsurface, the fluid dynamics in complex systems, pressure measurements, rates and fluid flow. Generalizaton of Darcy's law for fluid flow in porous media and its limitations. Numerical subsurface models and the integration of the available data (geological, geophysical and petrophysical) in the geo-modelling workflow. Interaction between static and dynamic models. Model validation and real application examples. Numerical fluid flow, different types of models and finite difference models. The main numerical simulators used in the energy industry. Initialization and calibration of the geological model.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic concepts on calculus, spatial statistics and physics.

Cross Competence Component

Development of teamwork and coomunication skills through the oral presentation of works (10% of continuous evaluation).

Laboratorial Component

Development of a project comprising the geological subsurface model for numerical fluid flow.

Programming And Computing Component

Generation of small scripts to initialize and parameterize the static and dynamic models. Scripting of parameter files for commercial software for the simulation of fluid dynamics in porous media (e.g. Eclipse, t-Navigator).

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
