Objectives

The students should understand the societal challenges related to the exploitation, production and consumption of Earth resources, including energy. The students should know how to identify which are the strategies for the sustainable development in the Mineral Resources and Energy fields and the emergent methods and tecnologies in these fields.

Syllabus

Mineral Resources: development strategies for sustainability. The mineral resources in the energy transition; strategic minerals resources and reserves; circular design and economy. Productivity increase in more complex environments: Digitalization; Real Time Mining; Deep Mining; Smart Mining; Automation; Data Science Methods and IOT; Deep-sea mining. Energy Mineral Resources. The geoenergy in the context of the world energy mix and in the energy transition. Digitalization and Data Science. Smart field production: Smart wells and smart fields. Strategy and Innovation in Geothermics (e.g., Enhanced Geothermal Systems - EGS): stimulation of geothermal systems. Conversion of geothermal energy. Greener power plants. Sustained development in the exploitation of Mineral and Energy resources (Environmental impacts of the mining activity in the quality of air, surface water and aquifers); Use of renewable energy in the mining activity. Carbon capture and storage.

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal competences in Critical Thinking (strategic thinking and problem solution approach, presentations and debates); Interpersonal and Intrapersonal competences (Oral, organizational and team work, autodiscipline, perseverance, auto-motivation); Information and media literacy (to search for and access information and evaluate media contents) and in global citizenship (ethics and social responsability in the engineering activity). The percentage of evaluation associated to these competences should be around 50%

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
