Objectives

Explain the working principle of internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and electric motors. Understand the influence of design parameters on the performance of internal combustion engines and hibrid engines. Know the restrictions imposed by environmental issues, and possible solutions.

Syllabus

Part I - Equipments Internal Combustion Engines: Working principle. Design and operational parameters. Combustion in SI engines. Knock. Combustion in Diesel engines. Forced induction. Gas Turbines: Working principles and components. Basic principles of electric motors. Rotating field. Induction motor. Equivalent circuit and characteristics. Synchronous motor Classification, equivalent circuit and characteristics. Speed adjustment by frequency variation. Energy Storage Systems: Specific power and specific energy. Battery management and recycling. Part II - Engines and the Environment: hibrid technologies and operation. Pollution: Control of emissions at the design phase and during operation. Aftertreatment equipment. Emissions associated with the manufacture and recycling of equipment: life cycle analysis. Decarbonisation strategies: ecological and sustainable mobility. Tank-to-wheel (TTW), well-to-tank (WTT) and well-to-wheel (WTW) analysis.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Combustion is required.

Innovative Critical Thinking (40%), Interpersonal Skills (30%), Intrapersonal Skills (30%).

Laboratorial Component

An internal combustion engine (Spark ignition engine) will be tested.
