Objectives

- To develop the understanding of territory and its organization, particularly the reasons, concepts and strategies that form the basis of urban life. The analytical effort is oriented to the identification of models and options that address the various stages of urban development. - To develop the capacity for the analysis and evaluation of urban form, i.e., the identification of the various stages of evolution, relating them to plans, programs and references throughout history and in relation to contemporary culture. - To develop students’ ability to read and to interpret maps concerning not only the analysis of urban plans and projects, but also urban planning as a critical exercise. To formulate an operational history which may provide the basis for an informed intervention by future architects.

Syllabus

To increase the knowledge and the historical background of the city and landscape through time. To reflect on the theoretical assumptions and the prevailing urban models as the organisation of collective space which reflects economic, social and political structures. Bases on a set of relevant topics on urgent contemporary issues, history is confronted with climate crises, health, well-being, power and social justice.

Cross Competence Component

The integration of SOFT SKILLS in this UC promotes the development of the following capacities: a) reflection, research and self-learning i.e, understanding the dimension and nature of the problems under study; consultation, organization and production of information about the problems under study; integration and relationship of knowledge acquired in other areas; b) to work autonomously and in groups, as well as establishing work bridges with other scientific areas; c) problematize, share and communicate concepts and knowledge acquired. The percentage of soft skills components in evaluation is 20%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
