Objectives

Provide students with an overview of the pharmaceutical, polymer and petrochemical industry. Allow acquisition of basic knowledge in the area of industrial property and patent system. Provide means to understand critically the chemistry and operations of an industrial synthesis as a complementary vision to the one of a chemical engineer, which will allow a better understanding, modification and execution of an industrial process, with emphasis on feasibility and safety. Sustained selection of a synthetic route.

Syllabus

Overview of the pharmaceutical, polymer and petrochemical industry. Introduction to industrial synthesis. Process safety. Case studies. Operations at industrial scale, Laboratory synthesis versus industrial synthesis. Green chemistry. Research and selection of synthetic route. Case studies. Industrial organic synthesis. The solvent. Common reagents and reactions (oxidation, reduction, CC bond formation reactions, resolution methods, biocatalysis, metal catalyzed reactions). Process development and optimization. Modules on performing basic operations on an industrial scale. Reaction, work-up, crystallization and drying. Continuous processes. Scale-up. Industrial property. Introduction to patents. Case studies.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in chemical engineering and organic chemistry

Cross Competence Component

Development of critical and innovative solutions for practical problems related to the scope of CU. Contribution to the overall evaluation - 10%
