Objectives

At the end of the course unit the student will: • understand the full scope of the product development process, from initial ideas to production, including the financial analysis of the product; • understand product architecture and use decomposition techniques; • design a product as a team utilizing design for X techniques; • implement structured project management methodologies to increase development efficiency and effectiveness; • understand the role of prototyping in a product development environment; • communicate with all stakeholders in the process;

Syllabus

1. What is a product? 2. The role of creativity in product development 3. The product development process 4. Product architecture 5. Design for X a) Design for manufacturing and assembly b) Design for risk management c) Design for the environment d).Design for maintenance e) Design for sustainability f) Design for supply chain g) Design for life cycle 6. Prototyping 7. Estimating product costs: contribution margin, production cost, and full cost. 8. Equilibrium analysis and economic viability of production. 9. Project management and evaluation. 10. Discussion of final projects

Prerequisites

Being an integration course at the end of the 2nd cycle, it is expected that students have acquired the necessary knowledge of the various courses preceeding this one. As the project is done in group and accompanied by faculty in class, it is expected that the individual limitations that may exist will be complemented with contributions from other elements of each group. However, individual contributions to group project will be evaluated.

-Critical and Innovative Thinking (e.g. creativity, strategic thinking, approaches to problem solving) -Interpersonal Skills (eg oral presentations, communication skills) communication and organization, teamwork, etc.) -Intrapersonal skills (eg self-discipline, enthusiasm, perseverance, self motivation, etc.) Soft skills will be evaluated in project presentations and account for 20% of the grade.

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
