Objectives

The purpose of this discipline is, at the same time, establishing the physical bases of musical creation a providing the students the basic notions concerning the procedures of production not only of one concert, but also a musical season. One of the practical components of this discipline will involve the student participation in the orchestra sections in the context of the existing collaboration between Técnico and the Ópera na Academia e na Cidade (OAC) Orchestra. The resulting orchestra will thus be called Orchestra of Técnico, and will be managed by the OAC orchestra under the already established protocol with IST. The remaining students will be able to participate in all other aspects of production or work in more technical aspects of musical activities, as will be further specified later on.

Syllabus

1st Week: Waves and wave phenomena; basic notions of acoustics 2nd Week: Physical principles of Music and of musical instruments 3rd Week: Scales, temperaments and their physical bases. 4th Week: Brief introduction to the History of Music; basic notions of musical genre with special emphsis to opera. 5th Week: Basic notions of production; Dramaturgy; Operatic Dramaturgy; Scenography; Design of Light and Wardrobes 6ª Semana: Principles of management of an artistic season (opera symphonic concerts, chamber music); creation of publics and annual programming. 7ª Semana: Presentation of the student work assignments

Prerequisites

It is recommended (but it is not mandatory) that the students have at least basic musical training and instrument practice. The inclusion in the orchestra will depend on preliminary audition.

basic concepts of production and management, in particular of musical events

Laboratorial Component

None for the students, but there can (should) exist demonstration in theoretical lectures.

Programming And Computing Component

not mandatory, but it may exist for students which desire to experiment with composing techniques or musical analysis or even simulation of acoustic processes in science or engineering.
