Introduction to Modern and Contemporary History

The classes were not designed to be helpful for the students that are not presenting. The teaching, on the other hand, was excellent.

Reading the book is important because of the multiple choices on the exam. I recommend enrolling on Francisco Henrriques class

It is a quarterly course entirely based on the a book. I believe it really pays off reading it a bit every week so you won't have to study almost entirely when the exam comes. Continuous evaluation is more towards checking if you understood that week's chapter and the exam can be more picky on dates and less relevant specifics. Teacher knows a lot and is reasonably good at answering even difficult questions. Main issue is the monotone pace of the classes and an evaluation more focused on memorizing the book over understanding it

This course lasts 6 weeks and has two classes per week. You will have to read a book called "The Journey of Humanity", one or two chapters before each class. Happily, the chapters are all on moddle, and you should know that the videos about the chapters are way too summarized. This course is essentially based on a book that every student must read before or during the semester, given that there are quizzes every class with questions related to the chapter that is being analyzed on that session. Also, there are discussions every session in which any student can participate, but there are groups established by the teacher that are designated to be assessed on two classes defined in the beginning of the semester. The course is interesting although the materials (slides and videos) are not really helpful. In my semester the exam was appropriate for what we talked in class but we should have more materials provided for following the course with more ease. The professor is great.

Cadeira acessível, o professor é super profissional. A avaliação consiste no exame e numa espécie de debate em aula, este último é bastante fácil de ter uma excelente nota, o exame já é diferente. Em relação a material, o professor recomenda a comprar o livro no qual se baseia os conteudos mas eu recomendo a não comprar pois o livro encontra-se online.

Thought it was easy, but have to memorise a lot of information. And I had two debates. Ended with 16 overall. Do your own notes in order to really understand the information. My tip is for you to search more outside information than what you have, I used chat gpt to complement my work, asked him everything so it would explain it better, really helped me. But reading the book is the most important I believe.

Necessary to read a book and to understand it just for a trimestral course. Really heavy work, but it was one of my favorites courses. I found it interesting.

It’s super theorical, boring and i didn’t like the course. The exam is many writing questions and you need to study harder.

Interesting course and easy to understand if you pay attention to classes. The exam is a little demanding as you need to know the subjects well to answer to the questions, as you should write a lot in each.

A lot of concepts to know, however in the exam they are not that rigorous as long as you show you have learned something and know specific things that one could only know by reading the book ( but reading the resumes is enough). You should go to every class as the teacher does a quiz in the beginning of each class.

I'm not a person who liked history at school; however, I really like the course material, it's really interesting, but has a very heavy workload for the credits it gives. A lot of pages to read per week, especially since in the beginning a person is not used to reading so much in English. A tip I give is to really read the pages. It helps in the exam. My professor was really kind and open to questions.

Worst course I took in my bachelors, without a doubt. You learn nothing new, and revisit things you already know in a dumb way. MEMORIZE the open questions answers.
