Descrição

Objectives

To enable the student to understand and apply the fundamental principles of the stress-strain analysis of geotechnical structures, using an automatic calculation program.

Syllabus

Principles of the finite element method. Defining a problem in a finite element method based software - geometry, mesh, boundary conditions, initial stresses. Modelling simple geotechnical structures: footing, isolated pile, cantilever and multi-supported retaining wall. Comparison with elasticity solutions and solutions obtained by applying limit analysis. Modelling of structural elements, excavation / fill and interfaces. Importance of the construction sequence. Coupled consolidation analysis.

Cross Competence Component

This course allows the development of transversal competences on Critical Thinking (strategic thinking and problem solving approaches), Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (written and oral communication, time management and team work, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation) and Information and Media Literacy (use of computer tools, ability to locate and access information, as well as to structure and format documents) in the course works and presentations. The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.

Programming And Computing Component

In the classes and in the resolution of the course works students will use a commercial software (Plaxis). The percentage of assessment associated with this component is greater than 50%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
