Descrição

Objectives

The curricular units aims to provide fundamental knowledge on building services, namely gas, fire safety, cold and hot water, sanitation and drainage. Designing tools are provided together with a wide coverage of the existing standards and regulations on these subjects. The students should be able to apply the acquired knowledge on a case study in order to get designing experience that will be of great use for their future professional life.

Syllabus

Gas supply: Classification of combustible gases; Design of gas installations; materials and accessory installations; LPG installations; Applicable regulations; Case study. Water supply: Supply and storage systems; Water consumption; Design flows; Designing of cold and hot water systems; Materials and accessory installations; Pumping systems; Case study. Fire safety and control: Stages in building fires; Reaction to fire and fire-resistance; Water availability; Designing of dry and wet risers, indoor firehoses and sprinklers; Materials and accessory installations; Applicable standards and regulations; Case study. Building drainage systems: Design flows; Types of drainage systems and designing; Materials and accessory installations; Applicable regulations; Case study. Rainwater drainage: Types of drainage systems and designing; Materials and accessory installations; Applicable regulations; Case study.

Prerequisites

It is recommended that students have successfully attended the following courses: Technical Drawing; Hydraulics I; Hydraulics II; Building Physics; Building Construction Technology; and Sanitary Engineering.

Cross Competence Component

The practical work (project), which constitutes the totality (100%) of the grading method, contributes to the development of the following set of competences: intrapersonal competences (productivity and time management, decision making); interpersonal skills (teamwork, oral communication); critical thinking; information literacy (use of computer tools from the user's perspective, structuring and formatting documents, searching and managing information); and global citizenship (ethics).

Laboratorial Component

There is no laboratory component.

Programming And Computing Component

The complexity of the project (case study) requires that students prepare calculation tools for intensive use, which must have a high degree of optimization, aiming to minimize or eliminate the number of manual or particular calculations to be performed.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
