Gestão de Resíduos Sólidos
Descrição
Objectives
Students should acquire the necessary knowledge to scale a system for remove waste and develop projects from landfills. They should also be able to establish the basis to design a treatment system for organic and energy recoveries and know the most common technologies. The advantages of an integrated municipal waste systems management should be clear to students in order to establish the relationships between the several operations, from collection to treatment, based on recovery and recycling.

Removal of solid waste: evolution, storage, equipment, types of removal, removal and transport circuits. Selective removal. Cleaning and sweeping of public spaces. Transfer stations: types and equipment. Closure of dumps: risks; closure procedures; monitoring. Landfills: location; constitution; types, infrastructure and support facilities. Waste-water leaching. Energy recovery - incineration: processes and technologies. Recovery of thermal energy and electrical energy production. Atmospheric emissions and treatment. Sustainability of municipal waste systems.
Cross Competence Component
During the classes the students should solve the exercises for calculating circuits and mass balance of waste using EXCEL. For the group work there should be a search and management of information the search for solutions "out of the box". The work will be in a team leading to the interconnection of the students and the leadership of the coordination. The final report and the Powerpoint will support the development of skills in document structuring and oral and written communication. The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
