Objectives

The student will get to know the importance of Earthquake Engineering for society, as well as be able to understand the behaviour of the soil and of geotechnical structures under seismic loading.

Syllabus

Relevance of Earthquake Engineering for Society. Notion of seismology. Seismic hazard and seismic risk. Dynamics of sdof. Behaviour of soils under cyclic loading. Stiffness and damping. Propagation and attenuation of seismic waves. Local site effects. Seismic codes. Cyclic mobility and liquefaction. Evaluation of the liquefaction susceptibility. Seismic response of retaining walls. Seismic response of slopes. Foundations under seismic loading.

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal competences on Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking and problem solving approaches, within the practical works and oral presentations; Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills (oral, organizational and teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, self-motivation skills - within the practical works and oral presentations); and Information and Media Literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate media content - within the practical works and oral presentations). The assessment percentage associated with these competences should be around 20%.

Programming And Computing Component

The students must solve the practical works using the platform Matlab, where they apply the direct and inverse form of the FFT function, plot an harmonic function in the trigonometric, exponential and complex forms, perform integration in time and in frequency domain of a seismic record and apply the complex response method to a single viscous-elastic layer.

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
