Objectives

Compute the response of structural systems when subjected to dynamic actions. Focus on growingly complex problems, in terms of the number of degrees-of- freedom and in terms of the nature of the time-varying actions. Single and multi degree-of freedom systems response, subjected to time-varying actions (applied forces or base motion input). Performance-based checks, both in structural and non-structural effects. Earthquake-resistant layout and design of structures (based on modal response spectrum analysis), expressed in applicable codes of practice. Understanding of the foundations of seismology and earthquake hazard.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to Structural Dynamics 1.1 Static vs dynamic actions. Types of dynamic actions 2 . Dynamics of single degree of freedom systems 2.1 Equation of motion 2.2 Free and forced vibrations 2.3. Response to general dynamic loading using Duhamel Integral 2.4 Response to ground motion. Response spectrum 3. Dynamics of multi degree of freedom systems 3.1 Frequency analysis by the Rayleigh method 3.2 Equation of motion for multi degree of freedom systems 3.3 Calculation of frequencies and vibration modes shapes 3.4 Modal analysis by response spectrum. 3.5 Dynamic analysis by time step integration. 4 Seismic design and analysis (Eurocode 8 and the Portuguese National Annex). 5. Concepts of seismicity and seismic risk.
