Objectives
Specific aspects of the design and construction of small craft (other than merchant ships), such as pleasure craft, maritime-touristic boats, work boats and fishing vessels.
Syllabus
Displacement, planing and semi-planing hulls. Building materials and techniques. Pleasure craft. Applicable rules and regulations. Power boats. Sailing vessels. Sails and masts. Velocity Prediction Programs (VPP). Work boats (rescue, patrol, pilots). Fishing vessels. Torremolinos Convention. Fishing gear. Refrigerating systems.
Prerequisites
Technical Drafting for Shipbuilding, Ship Hydrostatics, Resistance and Propulsion, Ship Basic Design I.
Cross Competence Component
Management of team work. Periodical oral presentations about the status of the ongoing project work. Final oral presentation and discussion of the results. These activities account for about 20% of the final grade.
Programming And Computing Component
Usage of specialized Naval Architecture commercial software. Usage of CAD systems. Development and usage of spreadsheets for specific calculations. These components account for about 20% of the final grade.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for all group's work. In any assessment every student should honestly disclose any help received or sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
