Objectives

Earn competences for the understanding of the specificities related to design and construction of road and irport pavements, namely for pavement mechanics, paving technology and design of new pavements.

Syllabus

1 - Course organization 2 - Main types and characteristics of road and airport pavements 3 - Structural behaviour, mechanical and climatic loading,and pavement mechanics 4 - Pavement foundation: constitution and its characterization 5 - Paving technology: materials, production, placement in the pavement and costs 6 - Design of road and airfield new pavements

Prerequisites

Option for the Transportation Systems Engineering branch of the program. There are no pre-conditions to achieve in the previous semestres.

Cross Competence Component

Due to evaluation structure (50% within group practical works) it is believed that the course contributes to development of personal and with others relationships competences, promoting the criticism and diferenciated approaches about the necessary analysis of the subjects, and demanding the search of alternatives not previously discussed.

Laboratorial Component

During classes, two weeks are dedicated to execution in the Pavement Laboratory of quality control and performance tests for paving materials.

Programming And Computing Component

When doing the practical works students are exposed to the use of software available to support quality control and performance tests for paving materials.
