Descrição

Objectives

(A) Provide advanced knowledge about the most used techniques in the structural characterization of solids and in the study of coatings/surfaces. (B) Show the advantages and disadvantages/limitations of the various characterization and analysis methods presented. (C) Provide an integrative view of the complementarity and applicability of the various methods. (D) Apply the knowledge acquired to practical cases. (E) Promote student autonomy in the search for solutions to proposed problems. (F) Improve teamwork skills.

Syllabus

Techniques for structural elucidation and surface characterization: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) in powders and single crystals, Solid State NMR, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Introduction to fundamental principles and their application.

Prerequisites

Chemical bond; Periodic properties of the elements; Functional groups and nomenclature; Errors and statistics: associated error and other parameters, simple linear regression.

Cross Competence Component

In the curricular unit MAE II, the soft skills will be developed and evaluated, including oral expression, written expression, team work, critical and innovative thinking, and problem solving strategies. Emphasis will be placed on continuous assessment in the TP and L components, and the transversal skills described above will be assessed.

Laboratorial Component

The work to be carried out in the laboratory component will be taught in the theoretical classes. Each student will carry out two laboratory works, one based on surface characterization techniques and the other on sensors. The group works will be carried out in weeks 3, 4, 6 and 7. In weeks 1, 2 and 5 the laboratory work and the respective preparation of the work will be presented.

Programming And Computing Component

----.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
