Objectives

Chemists of the 21st century have the responsibility to evaluate and integrate sustainable solutions in the development of reactions and products, which allow a sustainable development in the various aspects of the Chemical Industry. At the end of the course, students should have developed skills in: - use of green metrics to quantify the environmental impact of chemical reactions and chemicals - recognize and use REACH regulations (registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals) - recognize principles of sustainability and apply them to chemical reactions and chemicals - design sustainable alternative strategies and analyze their feasibility

Syllabus

Concepts of Green Chemistry and Sustainability. Contextualization and role of chemistry in societal challenges. Sustainable development goals. Green metrics to quantify the environmental impact of chemical reactions and chemicals. Recognize and use REACH regulations. Development of 3 projects with well- defined themes according to 3 sustainable development challenges or self- proposed themes. Design sustainable alternative strategies and analyze their feasibility.

Cross Competence Component

Strategic thinking, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving strategy

Laboratorial Component

The laboratory component will be distributed throughout the semester, with the aim of students assessing and quantifying the feasibility of the solutions proposed for the various projects.

Programming And Computing Component

Use of ab-initio and molecular dynamics tools to assess molecular aspects of projects.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
