Engenharia Farmacêutica II
Descrição
Objectives
This course aims to prepare students with the necessary skills for pharmaceutical product development in the pharmaceutical industry. The program focuses on providing skills in the field of pharmaceutical engineering applied to advanced drug delivery systems, including particle engineering, taking into account the control of crystal form, particle-design, controlled drug release mechanisms, micro- and nanoencapsulation, biological medicines and their stability. By the end of this course, students should be able to: Critically analyze difficulties that arise in pharmaceutical processes or products, based on scientific principles and within the context of (regulated) pharmaceutical industry practices. Propose process alternatives to overcome production challenges, supported by understanding of pharmaceutical technologies and classic case studies. Apply engineering tools, such as mathematical models, to interpret results and optimize processes.
Syllabus
The program includes specific, relevant aspects of current pharmaceutical productions and will involve the participation of specialists from the pharmaceutical industry. The main topics are: - Engineering of crystalline forms (polymorphism e co-crystallization) - Particle design by spray drying - Cryopreservation and freeze-drying - Stability of biologics - Micro- and nanoencapsulation - Controlled drug delivery
Prerequisites
Any student who has been admitted to the following 2nd Cycle programmes is eligible to take this course: MEFarm, MEQ, MEBiol, MEBiom or MEAmb.
Cross Competence Component
This unit provides the skills necessary to understand the industrial processes underlying the development of advanced drug delivery systems, namely biological medicines. In terms of transversal abilities, we mean the development of skills in relevant industrial processes such as freezing, freeze-drying, micro and nanoencapsulation, spray drying and production technologies using supercritical fluids.
Programming And Computing Component
MATLAB toolboxes for plant modelling and simulation.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
