Descrição

Objectives

Develop technical and analytical skills in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and applications, focusing on real-world challenges. The course adopts a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, enabling practical application of knowledge through industry-proposed problems. It aims to prepare students to explore chain value products and integrate sustainable and innovative solutions in the context of the energy transition.

Syllabus

The course is structured in six modules: Hydrogen Fundamentals, Storage and Transport, Industrial Applications, Sensing and Safety, Future Perspectives, and a final module dedicated to the development of an applied project The course begins with hydrogen fundamentals: properties, global market, and production technologies (steam reforming, electrolysis, photoelectrochemical, biomass). It then addresses storage and transport: material compatibility, gas diffusion, compression, liquefaction, metal hydrides, solid-state storage, and LOHCs. Industrial uses include H₂ combustion, fuel cells, and hybrid systems. Safety is covered via sensors, hazard analysis, and regulations. The final modules explore market trends, policies, and a project applying these concepts in labs and industry-supported settings.

Prerequisites

Suggested prerequisites to attend curricular units of with contents of Reactive Systems and/or Heat Transfer and/or Computational Fluid Mechanics and/or Experimental Methods in Energy Systems and/or Renewable Energies.
