Descrição

Objectives

a) Understand transport systems and challenges in their technical, economic, social, and environmental dimensions; b) Learn to observe and measure the attributes of traffic flows and the factors that determine transport choices; c) Understand demand behavior using simple estimation models; d) Understand the dependencies between land use and transport supply; e) Understand the objectives, difficulties, and challenges underlying unimodal and intermodal transport networks; f) Evaluate the organization and performance of transport networks (infrastructure and services).

Syllabus

1. Description of the transport system and its relationship with society, the territory, and the environment 2. Fundamental elements of the operational characterization of transport systems and their performance evaluation (focusing on road and rail mobility infrastructure and services) 3. Complements to vehicle technologies and transport infrastructures (with a focus on road and rail modes); 4. Data collection, recording, and representation of mobility; 5. The role of mathematical models in estimating transport demand; 6. Trend, elasticity, and discrete choice models for estimating transport demand; 7. Structuring, coordination, and performance evaluation of transport service networks; 8. Intermodality in transport systems: potential, difficulties, and solutions; 9. Macroscopic mathematical models for transport planning (4-Step Model); 10. Sustainable urban mobility plans.

Prerequisites

There are no requirements for this course.

Cross Competence Component

The teaching methodology adopted in the Transportation course integrates theoretical and practical sessions, fostering the development of both technical knowledge and transversal competencies essential for comprehensive student formation. This pedagogical approach aligns with the pedagogical guidelines of the IST, enhancing students skills transferable across various professional contexts. By engaging in case studies and practical exercises, students improve their critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, and time management abilities. Furthermore, the integrated assessment of these transversal competencies underscores their significance in the learning process. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that students not only acquire specific technical expertise but also develop the necessary soft skills to navigate in the professional realm of transport systems.

Laboratorial Component

There are no laboratorial compenents.

Programming And Computing Component

There are no programming and computing component.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
