Descrição

Objectives

To provide students—future Engineers integrated into the Construction sector—with complementary knowledge related to: the construction life cycle, including the life cycle stages of materials, building systems, and buildings; inspection systems and the prediction of service life of construction elements; strategies and tools aimed at building maintenance planning; and the end-of-life phase of these structures. The course unit also provides fundamental knowledge and tools for assessing and calculating environmental impacts and life cycle costs of buildings, as well as core concepts of decarbonization and circularity in construction. By the end of the semester, students are expected to be familiar with the relevant methodologies to be applied throughout the building's service life, aiming at proactive maintenance, better cost optimization, and an integrated view of the sustainability of buildings, systems, and products.

Syllabus

The construction life cycle;service life; life cycle stages; maintenance of buildings in service; proactive maintenance strategies; maintenance plans; software-based maintenance support tools; inspection and service life prediction systems of building elements; demolition and deconstruction; assessment of costs, environmental impacts and social performance, and integrated assessment of sustainability, of buildings, building assemblies and products, incluinding their decarbonization and circularity.

Prerequisites

It is recommended that students complete first the Construction Pathology and Rehabilitation course.
