Hidroinformática
Descrição
Objectives
This Course Unit (CU) aims to provide programming knowledge related to solving various problems in the field of hydraulics and water resources. The main goal is to provide students with skills that are highly valued in the job market and useful for application in consulting, industry, and research. In this CU, programming is understood as a means to achieve highe productivity and analytical capabilities, being theoretical concepts illustrated, whenever possible, by practical examples. In more detail, the objectives are to: (i) introduce the Python programming language, as well as good programming practices; (ii) import, export, manipulate, and visualize data; (iii) cover machine learning concepts and apply simple models; (iv) apply calibration/optimization algorithms; (v) operate specialized modelling software.
Syllabus
1. Introduction to the Python programming language. Installation and IDE (Interactive Development Environment). 2. Specific features of the Python language and basic types such as lists and dictionaries. 3. Conditionals and loops. 4. Functions and classes. 5. Pandas and Numpy modules for importing, manipulating, and exporting data.. 6. Matplotlib and Seaborn modules for data visualization. 7. Basic machine learning concepts: cross-validation, dimensionality reduction, and pipelines using the sklearn module. 8. Machine learning models. 9. Optimization. 10. Program control: 10a. EPANET (water distribution) 10b. SWMM (drainage) 10c. HEC-RAS (hydraulics and sediment transport) 10d. RS-Minerve (hydrological modelling)
Prerequisites
Students should be able to use a laptop during classes. Interest in modelling tools and programming techniques is expected. Familiarity with some of the modelling software used (EPANET, SWMM, HEC-RAS, and/or RS-Minerve) is an asset.
Cross Competence Component
This course unit includes the development of the following transversal skills: – Reasoning and critical thinking in solving individual or group problems, with the support of AI tools; – Interpersonal skills (i.e., communication and teamwork) during project work; – Information and media literacy (i.e., information search and management, and report structuring); – Written communication (preparation of group exercise reports); – Oral communication (during class interactions related to group exercises and their final discussion).
Programming And Computing Component
This course unit focuses primarily on teaching and training students in programming and computing applied to problems in hydraulics and water resources using the Python programming language, being this component strongly promoted in the course.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
