Projeto Mecânico
Descrição
Objectives
The objective of this curricular unit is to develop in the students the ability to apply the basic engineering sciences, previously studied in other curricular units, to mechanical design and mechanical components. At the end, students should be able to design mechanical elements of moderate complexity, based on analytical and numerical tools and to combine geometric modelling with numerical tools with a critical design perspective.
Syllabus
Mechanical design: Design and its phases; Standards and Codes of Design. Static loading failure theories: Tresca; von Mises; Introduction to Fracture Mechanics. Fatigue failure theories: Strain-life; Stress-life; Goodman; ASME; Gerber; Soderberg. Dimensioning of Bolted and Riveted joints: Bolted joints with axial, transverse or combined loading; Fatigue failure criteria. Dimensioning of Welding joints: Welded joints with axial, transverse or combined loading; Fatigue failure criteria. Dimensioning of Mechanical Springs: Stresses and deformations in helical springs; Stability; Fatigue resistance of coil springs. Introduction to Design of Mechanical Components: Bearings; Gears; Clutches and Brakes.
Prerequisites
Technical Drawing and Geometrical Modelling, Materials in Engineering, Mechanics of Materials, Continuum Mechanics.
Cross Competence Component
Soft Skills with a weight of 10% of the 50% of the Midterm Assessment: 1- Critical and Innovative Thinking (Creativity and approaches to problem solving); 2- Interpersonal Skills (Oral presentations, communication skills and teamwork); 3- Intrapersonal Skills (Self-discipline, enthusiasm, perseverance, and self motivation).
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
