Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering

  • 3 years · 6 semesters
  • 180 ECTS

The Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP). It runs in daytime hours and also in an after-work schedule, which depends on a minimum number of enrolments.

Chemical engineering links the molecular sciences to industrial technology: traditionally associated with refining, petrochemicals and basic chemicals, it now also works in health, biotechnology, advanced materials, energy, consumer products and environmental solutions. The degree prepares students to manage product and process projects in industrial and laboratory settings, with case studies and a lab course in each of the first five semesters. The plan includes General and Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Physical Chemistry and Thermodynamics, Fluid Transport Systems, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Separation Processes, Instrumentation and Control, Optimisation in the Chemical Industry, Materials and Corrosion and Economics and Management. The degree ends with a project or internship, in a company or academic setting.

Graduates work in industrial processes and management, laboratory and industrial quality control, the development of new materials and products, environmental management, analytical methods, and research and training. At ISEP, they can apply to the Master's in Chemical Engineering.
