Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering

  • 3 years · 6 semesters
  • 180 ECTS

The Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP). It runs in daytime hours and also in an after-work schedule, which depends on a minimum number of enrolments.

Mechanical engineering is a multidisciplinary field, with work ranging from automation to automotive engineering, from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to materials and manufacturing processes, and from structural mechanics to biomechanics. The degree gives a grounding in mathematics, physics, materials and technical drawing and knowledge of mechanical design, fluids and heat, industrial management and materials and manufacturing processes, with a technological and practical component. The plan includes Materials Science, Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials, Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials, Mechanical Design Drawing, Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Manufacturing Processes, Machine Elements, Automation, Turbomachinery, Thermal Machines and Industrial Organisation. The degree ends with a project or internship.

Graduates work in the design, development and maintenance of machines and equipment, the control of mechanical and thermal processes and systems, the development and application of materials, operations and production management, and consultancy. At ISEP, they can apply, for example, to the Master's in Mechanical Engineering, in Industrial Engineering and Management, in Supply Chain Engineering and Management or in Automotive Engineering.
