Bachelor's in Applied Physics Engineering
- 3 years · 6 semesters
- 180 ECTS
The Bachelor's in Applied Physics Engineering is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP), in daytime hours. It combines modern physics, mathematics, computing and engineering to understand complex systems and turn them into solutions, in fields from energy to new materials and from instrumentation to medical physics.
The training has a strong practical and laboratory component, with simulation, programming and measurement and data analysis systems. The 1st year includes Mechanics and Relativity, Vibrations and Waves, Thermodynamics and Fluids, Programming Applied to Physics and labs in Mechanics and Metrology and in Waves and Heat. The 2nd year covers Elements of Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Electrical Circuits and Electronics, Materials Physics, Instrumentation and Sensors, Metrology and Optics and Optoelectronics. The 3rd year includes Signal and Image Processing, Data Processing and Analysis, Materials Processing Technologies and Technology Management and Entrepreneurship. In the final semester, students choose between an internship and a project, one elective (Applied Metrology, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence or Materials Characterisation Techniques) and one free-choice course from ISEP.
Graduates work in industry (sensors, instrumentation, semiconductors, advanced electronics, industrial metrology), in research and development of new materials and equipment, in medical physics (diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy), in energy and sustainability, and in data science and finance.
