Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering

  • 3 years · 6 semesters
  • 180 ECTS

The Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP), in daytime hours. It brings together principles, methods and tools from science, technology and engineering to analyse and solve problems in medicine and biology, with a particular weight on electronics and computing.

The training is practical, on a scientific basis. The 1st year combines mathematics, physics, chemistry and programming with Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Molecular and Cell Biology, Computer-Aided Design and Biomedical Instrumentation. The 2nd year includes Anatomy and Physiology, Biostatistics, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Biomaterials and Tissue Regeneration, Medical Physics and Information Systems and Databases Applied to Health. The 3rd year covers Biomechanics of the Human Body, Biosensors, Medical Image Processing, Biological Signal Processing, Medical Informatics and Management and Entrepreneurship, and ends with a Project and electives.

Graduates work in hospitals and health centres, in diagnostic and imaging, haemodialysis, radiotherapy, clinical analysis and physiotherapy centres, in companies making biomedical and hospital equipment and health software, and in bioengineering and biomedicine research centres. At ISEP, they can apply to the Master's in Biomedical Engineering.
