Bachelor's in Bioresources

  • 3 years · 6 semesters
  • 180 ECTS

The Bachelor's in Bioresources is a 3-year first-cycle degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) at the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP), in daytime hours. It centres on adding value to and managing biological resources and on the circular economy, using bioresources and waste for more sustainable management.

The plan is multidisciplinary and aims at three fronts: the rational use and sustainable management of bioresources; the development and quality control of bioproducts for food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals; and solving environmental problems linked to soil and water recovery. The first years give a grounding in Biology, General, Analytical and Organic Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Statistics, Biochemistry and Microbiology. Then come Fundamentals and Technology of Bioprocesses, Natural Products, Quality in Bioproducts, Sustainability, Natural Materials Science, Valorisation and Management of Bioproducts and Biotechnological Applications. There is a lab course in each of the first five semesters, with case studies and laboratory classes, and the degree ends with an internship.

Graduates work in biotechnology companies and bio-industries (agri-food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, bioenergy, biorefining), in physical-chemical and biological analysis, inspection and quality control laboratories, in research and technology transfer centres, in environmental management, in biotechnology consultancy and in public bodies. At ISEP, they can apply to the Master's in Bioresources.
