Description

Objectives

With this course unit the student will be able: - to enumerate and distinguish the main geological processes at regional and local scales that control the formation of energetic and geothermal mineral resources. - to distinguish and discuss the igneous and metamorphic, geochemical and structural geology processes responsible for forming the type of resources addressed. - Know the main characteristics of the energy fluids and heat on Earth. - Know the main occurrences geothermal reservoirs in Portugal and its geodynamic framework.

Syllabus

Nature of natural rock energy reservoirs: geothermal reservoirs and oil and gas reservoirs. The processes that control the formation of geological reservoirs, examined in the framework of the tectonic, petrogenetic and geochemical evolution of the Earth's crust on local, regional and global geological scales. Characterization of the various types of reservoirs: Fractured, Clastic and Carbonated. Main exploration techniques. The Properties of Reservoir Rocks: Porosity, Permeability, Fluid Saturations, Wettability. Basic concepts for the calculation of Reserves: methods of assessment of formations, maps and geological profiles, characterization of petrophysical properties, practical examples of application. Fluid compositions and properties.

Laboratorial Component

Practical-laboratory activities: - lithological and stratigraphic modeling. - reservoir modelling based on maps and cross sections;

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
