Description

Objectives

This course will provide students with: 1) knowledege about the main applied environmental geophysical prospecting methods; 2) understanding the planning and design of environmental geophysics methods; 3) interpretation techniques for different types of geophysical data; 4) recognition of the importance of geophysics to the resolution of environmental problems and the sustainable development of natural resources.

Syllabus

The theoretical classes will be mainly expository and teh laboratory classes will be used to solve problems. The topics to be covered are: 1. Introduction fo geophysical methods of environmental prospecting; 2. Data analysis in environmental geophysics; 3. Seismic methods and applications in environmental prospecting; 4. Electromagnetic methods and applications in environmental prospecting; 5. Electrical methods and applications in in environmental prospecting; 6. Ground penetrating radar 7. Hydrogeophysics applications.

Cross Competence Component

During this Curricular Unit, students have the opportunity to develop a set of transversal skills, namely: i) teamwork; ii) critical and innovative thinking (creativity, problem solving); iii) intra-personal skills (self-discipline, enthusiasm, perseverance, personal motivation); and iv) inter-personal skills (communication, organization, decision, initiative, oral presentation).

Laboratorial Component

The assignment of this course will be developed under a computational framework.

Programming And Computing Component

Laboratory classes and assignment use computational resources, namely scientific programming languages (Python) for the interpretation of the geophysical data.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
