Description

Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills related to strategies for the prevention and control of atmospheric emissions to minimize their impacts on air quality. Students will acquire the ability to: i) understand the chemistry of the atmosphere; ii) identify the sources, properties and impacts of the main air pollutants; iii) quantify atmospheric emissions from different sectors iv) select and design the main equipment for gaseous and particulate pollutants control.

Syllabus

Classification of air pollutants (global, regional, primary and secondary). Stratospheric ozone layer depletion and tropospheric ozone formation. Monitoring and sampling of air pollutants. Air quality index. Indoor air quality. Quantification of atmospheric emissions from combustion processes. Atmospheric dispersion. Origin, properties, impacts, prevention and control of the major air pollutants emissions. Control of particulate pollutants (gravitational settlers, cyclones, electrostatic precipitators, filters and scrubbers) and gaseous pollutants (scrubbers; activated carbon adsorption, oxidation / reduction with or without catalysts, biofilters and bioscrubbers).

Prerequisites

Basic chemistry, CEA, PRSET

Cross Competence Component

Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills: oral, organizational and teamwork and self-discipline ( autonomous preparation of exercises/topics, deadlines , group work), critical thinking (selection and analysis of alternatives and solutions), ability to locate, access and select information (data for examples resolution will be partly obtained by students from general access sources). It is estimated that 10% of the evaluation will focus on soft skills.

Programming And Computing Component

Excel or other

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
