Description

Objectives

The Heritage and Digital Cultures course aims to analyse and discuss the way in which information technologies have transformed the processes of study, conservation, dissemination and enjoyment of cultural heritage, with a special emphasis on architectural heritage and museums. Drawing on specialised bibliography, online resources and contributions from professionals across various fields, this course will identify and discuss current issues, particularly regarding the digitisation of built heritage and museum collections. It thus aims to foster a critical reflection on the social impact of digital integration in the cultural sector, considering initiatives from leading institutions as well as new creative and curatorial dynamics that engage diverse audiences.

Syllabus

1. Introduction, theoretical framework and key concepts. Digitisation of cultural heritage vs. digital heritage. Current topics and problems. Cultural diversity, digital cultures and the challenges of artificial intelligence. 2. Technological evolution and digital cultures – a brief historical perspective. 3. Art and architecture after the Internet – new concepts, media and practices. Virtual museums. 4. Digitisation, documentation and dissemination of cultural heritage. Reference platforms and online exhibitions. Digital accessibility. 5. Art museums: digitisation of collections, open access and creative re-use. 6. Digital technology and architectural heritage: from survey processes to virtual reconstruction. 7. The impact of digital technology on the experience of visitors to museums, monuments and sites. Interfaces and mediation systems. Expanded reality and interactivity. 8. Monuments and urban iconography in a digital age. Participatory dynamics and social media.

Cross Competence Component

The transdisciplinary nature of this course encompasses various soft skills, namely: a) the approach to heritage, from a perspective that values cultural diversity, aims to foster intercultural dialogue and citizenship; b) the proposed activities seek to contribute to enhancing digital literacy; c) the debates held in class, along with questionnaires and group work, also aim to encourage reflection, critical thinking, and the integration of knowledge acquired in other fields, as well as to develop oral and written communication skills. These soft skills underlie the whole evaluation process, both in the individual component (50%) and in the group work (50%).

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
