Description

Objectives

The objective of the discipline of Environmental Design II is to provide basic knowledge on Daylighting design, identifying environmental design strategies to be used in the Architectural Project, both at urban and building scale. Various case studies are analysed, using both physical and computer models. The students may choose to run for international student design competitions

Syllabus

The program involves 7 weeks of theoretical and practical classes. The theorectical classes provide basic knowledge on environmental design, covering passive design strategies for daylighting. The practical classes involve the supervision of a design project developed throughout the semester. This project is generally part of an international student competition, and can be articulated with the work carried out on the discipline of Final Project.

Cross Competence Component

Use of previously learned computer programs. Application of concepts learned in previous disciplines (e.g. Building, Construction Physics). The constitution of the teams has in account an indication among the members of a leader with responsibility for ensuring the functioning of the team and the achievement of objectives in each of the activities of the project exercise. Oral presentation and discussion of the exercise and public presentation is an integral part of the functioning of the UC. The percentage of transversal components in the evaluation takes 20%.

Laboratorial Component

Use of software to assess environmental performance in building design, and use of monitoring equipment.

Programming And Computing Component

Use of software to assess environmental performance in building design (energy consumption, bioclimatic performance) - 30% of the final grade in practical classes.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
