Description

Objectives

Characterize the main stages of an Engineering Project and enable students to: Develop problem-solving skills using project-based learning Stimulate decision-making and innovation skills to solve chemical engineering problems. Define the assumptions needed to overcome data limitations. Analyze production process proposals, understand their limitations and challenges, proposing improvements and optimization taking into account the best available technologies. Implement optimized solutions for energy and utilities management, effluent management and emissions control.Proposing process control in the main unit operations. Know the main economic evaluation indicators for a plant project and discuss its viability based on relevant indicators. Critically discuss the technical solutions implemented Integrate knowledge and content developed in other CUs

Syllabus

Analyze a proposed manufacturing process for a chemical product, provided to the students, which includes market analysis, location, plant technology and balance sheets.Implement energy integration solutions, size equipment and optimize unit operations. Identify and quantify utilities and services. Identify the main safety and environmental challenges, proposingimprovements/mitigations. Define the instrumentation and control required for processoperation and safety.Estimate the investment, calculate the production cost and estimate the profitability of the investment. Carry out a sensitivity analysis and identify parameters with a critical impact on the viability of the process, proposing possible improvements. Discuss the sustainability of the project. The development of the project involves theoretical classes and practical classes that address specific topics to be developed in the project. It also involves tutorial classes aimed at stimulating student autonomy.

Prerequisites

Approval of 2nd cycle specialization UCs

Cross Competence Component

In this UC students develop autonomous work and have to demonstrate critical thinking and innovative capacity to formulate problems, defining creative but viable assumptions and solutions, within the technical and economic requirements. Students develop their skills of oral expression and communication either between colleagues or with teachers. UC promotes teamwork and task planning and optimization. The UC encourages motivation, perseverance in the collection of information, objective analysis of its contents, the systematization and application of that information. These contents are embedded in the development of the UC and are reflected in the various evaluation components, representing a total of 10% of the proposed evaluation.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every student should honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
