Description

Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills in the areas of heterogeneous catalysis and homogeneous catalysis.

Syllabus

Introduction to Catalysis: general review of chemical reactivity and the concept of activation barrier. The phenomenon of catalysis seen at the molecular level. Main types of catalysis (acidic, basic, redox, etc ...). Homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis. Electro-catalysis. Photo- catalysis. Biocatalysis. The importance of catalysis in living beings. Heterogeneous Catalysis: Basic concepts of heterogeneous catalysis; Concepts of preparation of heterogeneous catalysts; Mass and energy transfer in heterogeneous catalysis; Mechanisms and kinetics in heterogeneous catalysis; Characterization of active centers; Zeolites and catalysis with zeolites Homogeneous Catalysis: Main types of homogeneous catalysis. Type of catalysts: coordination compounds and organic compounds. Homogeneous catalytic processes of industrial significance.

Prerequisites

All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.

Cross Competence Component

Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills: oral, organizational and teamwork (limited time for delivery, group work, presentation of group work). It is estimated that about 5% of the assessment will focus on transversal skills.
