Description

Objectives

Describe a wide range of experimental methods and measurement techniques used in the characterization of energy systems. Students will have contact with a wide range of experimental methods, which will be analyzed and discussed from the point of view of operating principles and specific functional characteristics, giving particular importance to the uncertainties of the results they provide and depending on the conditions of use. The study of experimental methods is a necessary extension of analytical knowledge. The knowledge of experimental methods for the characterization of energy conversion processes allows to enrich, deepen and develop the analytical knowledge used in the analysis of these processes, while a clear understanding of the measurement difficulties develops a careful attitude in the theoretical.

Syllabus

Selection of the methodology for the characterization of energy systems and the most appropriate instrumentation to measure the relevant quantities. Experimental characterization for mathematical modeling and validation of analytical and numerical models for energy audits. Description of techniques for measuring electrical flows, heat flows, current and power and techniques for measuring velocity fields pressure, temperature and chemical composition in flows, including those with variations in temperature and chemical composition. Analysis of the flow properties on the accuracy of the results. Data acquisition, conditioning and processing techniques, including image processing and programming platforms. Measurement planning and instrumentation selection. Presentation of experimental results.).

Prerequisites

Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics.

Cross Competence Component

The course is oriented for students to follow active learning strategies which offer the environment for students to develop and hone skills that will be valuable in the future. An important component of these strategies is that students will develop practical applications which are presented and discussed with all actors, students and academic staff. This is viewed as an opportunity for students to practice a number of essential academic and professional skills, such as: discussing their subjects with clarity; arguing logically and tactfully; listening to different points of view; making considered criticisms and comments; and, expressing their opinions and identifying the evidence upon which they are based.

Laboratorial Component

The project is done in the Laboratory.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
