Description

Objectives

Describe the physical mechanisms of radiative emission, radiative absorption and scattering. Introduce the radiative transfer equation. Describe computational methods to solve radiative heat transfer problems in participating media. Present the radiative properties of gases and particles and describe simple methods to estimate these properties. Present the fundamentals of heat transfer with phase change. Describe the physical mechanisms and present empirical correlations to estimate the convective heat transfer coefficient in processes of pool boiling, forced boiling, film condensation and dropwise condensation. Present the fundamentals of heat transfer in porous media. Introduce the macroscopic transport equations in porous media. Define effective properties of porous media and present methods to estimate them. Introduce the fundamental concepts of heat exchangers design, the fundamentals of compact heat exchangers and heat transfer augmentation.
