Description

Objectives

Provide the student with knowledge about mechanical behavior of materials as a user and designer of mechanical equipments. Present the most relevant experimental procedures for mechanical testing of materials, the methods for life prediction and the influence of defects on the onset of fatigue, fracture and creep failure.

Syllabus

Failure modes in materials and structures. Brittle and ductile fracture. Stress concentration. Toughness. Plastic collapse. Plastic collapse stress for elementary loading conditions. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM): K and G parameters. Residual strength. Fracture toughness. Design philosophies: Fail safe, Safe life, Life extension, Damage tolerance. Experimental methods for LEFM. LEFM and R curve method. Elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM): J integral and CTOD. R6 code. Tribology: Friction and Wear. Fatigue with the local strain method, LCF Fatigue design and variable amplitude loading fatigue. Fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. Fatigue life prediction. Fatigue in welded joints. Creep and stress relaxation: Creep mechanisms, Creep-fatigue at high temperature, Creep damage.

Prerequisites

Materials Science, Materials in Engineering, Integrated Project in Mechanical Engineering.

Cross Competence Component

- Critical and Innovative Thinking (creativity, strategic thinking, problem solving approaches) - Interpersonal Skills (oral presentations, communication and organizational skills, teamwork, etc.) - Intrapersonal skills (self discipline, enthusiasm, strength, self motivation, etc.). The assessment of the soft skills corresponds to 5% of the laboratory reports grade and 5% of the case study report grade.

Laboratorial Component

2 labs: CTOD test - Crack Tip Openning Displacement Fatigue test

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
