Description

Objectives

Students should acquire knowledge on the main types of surface treatments and technologies and the respective fields of application, in particular of coatings for protection against surface materials degradation.

Syllabus

Principles of Surface Engineering. Modification of surfaces. Modification of topography: Polishing and surface texturing; Modification of Microstructure: surface hardening; Modification of Chemical Composition: thermochemical treatments, ion implantation and surface alloying. Coatings. Surface preparation. Organic coatings: paints and varnishes; paint protection; paint constitution and drying mechanisms; paint systems. Application methods. Other organic coatings. Inorganic coatings: Electrodeposition, Immersion, Diffusion, Chemical deposition, Thermal projection, Cladding. Deposition of thin films. Physical vapor deposition methods: evaporation, sputtering, plasma assisted techniques. Chemical vapor deposition methods, plasma assisted techniques. Chemical conversion treatments (phosphating, chroming) and anodizing (Al anodizing, anodic oxide characteristics, sealing and coloring. Coatings Selection.

Cross Competence Component

Several strands of soft skills will be explored in this UC First of all, its objectives focus on the surface protection of materials, which implies taking into account issues of global citizenship in particular social and civic responsibility, especially in the evaluation and management of the life cycle of materials. On the other hand, in the laboratory component, students, in groups, will work in a laboratory environment and develop written reports and oral presentations. In this component, several skills will be developed and evaluated: intrapersonal skills (productivity and time management, in the development of the theme and in its presentation), interpersonal (oral communication, teamwork and leadership) and skills of information and media literacy (search and management of information, structuring and formatting of reports and presentations). Thus, the weight of soft skills will correspond, at least, to 25% of UC ECTS, i.e. 1.5 ECTS.

Laboratorial Component

Laboratory classes will involve a number of experimental work on testing for corrosion and wear of different materials, in several simulated conditions. The students will perform the pratical work along the semester organized in groups. The laboratory component will be object of written reports that will be presented and discussed in a public session. The laboratory component account for 50% of the total evaluation of the sudent.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
