Materiais Funcionais
Description
Objectives
It is intended that students expand their perspectives and knowledge in new types of materials, with different functionalities that can eventually be changed through external stimuli, and that are in different stages of development or application, in order to enlarge their scientific and technological culture towards the future.
Syllabus
This UC has a modular structure, which reflects the diversity of skills in science and technology of materials that exists at IST. It will include a set of introductory classes and several modules on materials with specific functionalities, chosen from the topics indicated. Each module will be taught by a guest specialist. Structure: Introduction. What are functional materials? Features and applications. Modules. Examples of Functional Material Modules: optical; for electronics, optoelectronics and spintronics; thermoelectric; piezoelectric and ferroelectric; magnetic; with shape memory; functionalization of surfaces; supercapacitors; photovoltaic; ultra-hard; for extreme environments (thermal barriers, ultra-high temperature, highly corrosive environments, high pressures, etc.). Types of applications: energy, nuclear fission and fusion, defense, aerospace, sensors and actuators, information technology, etc.
Prerequisites
Courses on Structure of materials, Electromagnetism and optics, Physical properties of materials and Spectroscopic charcaterization and thermal analysis of the first and second cycles of Materials Engineering.
Cross Competence Component
The Soft Skills will be developed essentially in the laboratory component. Strategic Thinking, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Problem Solving Strategies, Productivity and Time Management, Proactivity and Initiative Spirit, Intrinsic Motivation, Decision Making, Written Communication, Work in Team, Respect for diversity, Professional Deontology, Search and information management, and Structuring and formatting reports will be encouraged. 20% is the percentage of its evaluation components that include the Soft Skills.
Laboratorial Component
Preparation and characterization of a functional material, chosen from a list.
Ethical Principles
All members of a group are responsible for the group´s work. In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
