Description
Objectives
The student should learn the electronic and optoelectronic applications of semiconductor and insulating materials, should gain a deeper insight into the relationship between the structure of materials and its electric, optical and magnetic behaviour, should be acquainted with typical values of the relevant properties, to do project and qualitative previsions, should understand the inner working of devices such as junction diodes, photovoltaic cells, transistors, lasers and optical fibers.
Syllabus
Resistors, capacitors, inductors, Thévenin's theorem, Kirchhoff's Laws, impedance. Polarization, electric susceptibility, absolute permittivity, Clausius-Mosotti equation, Gauss's theorem, electrical breakdown, piezoelectric, ferroelectric and pyroelectric materials. Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, recombination, optical absortion, electron and hole diffusion, continuity equation, piezoresistivity, Schottky junction, Schottky solar cell, ohmic contacts, Peltier effect, Seebeck effect. Semiconductor devices, pn junction, diodes, LEDs, solar cells, transistors BJT, JFET and MOSFET. Soft and hard magnetic materials, energy band diagrams and magnetism, magnetoresistance, magnetic recording materials, superconductivity. Optical properties. Thin film interference. Types of optical fibers. Dispersion and attenuation in optical fibers. Ellipsometry. Absorption and luminescence of lanthanide-doped solids.

Electromagnetism, Solid state physics.

Laboratorial Component
2 laboratory works per group, with presentation and discussion.
