Description

Objectives

It is intended that the students develop the following competences: •To contextualize problems, design flowsheets, define strategies and propose solutions for problems with comminution, classification and separation processes. •To solve mass balance exercises, equipment sizing and mathematical modeling. •To design an adequate experimental plan and perform correct experimentation. •To treat data from laboratory tests including parameter estimation and statistical validation of mathematical models. • To link and integrate processes in a complete processing flowsheet. • To use models previously validated in the simulation of circuits and equipment sizing. •To present the results in writting and oral form. •To search for recent information and developments of the subjects treated in the course.

Syllabus

1. Project tasks. 2. Information collection and characterization of streams and materials. Sampling and characterization techniques (particle size and density analysis, work index, abrasion index, kinetic analysis, settling velocity). 3. Flowsheets synthesis (creation of plausible alternatives). Typical circuits of processing. Selection of comminution, classification and separation equipment. Identification of project variables. 4. Processing flowsheets analysis (scaling, simulation and mass balance in steady state). 5. Sizing of the main equipment of comminution, classification and separation processes.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of General Chemistry, Physics, Mineralogy, Petrology, Mass Balance, Mineral and Solid Waste Processing

Cross Competence Component

The CU allows the development of transversal competences such as Critical Thinking, Interpersonal competences(Team work; presentation of results in writting and oral form), Intrapersonal competences (laboratory work), Information and media literacy (to search for information and recent developments relative to the treated subjects). The percentage of evaluation associated to these competences should be around 35%.

Laboratorial Component

  1. Grinding kinetic test; 2) Flotation kinetic test

Programming And Computing Component

To treat laboratory tests data including parameter estimation and statistical validation (5%)

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
