Description

Objectives

know the most used numerical methods for the simulation of the most important physical processes in Geo-Energy Engergy and Geological and Mining Engineering, particularly those related with fluid flow, and heat tranfer in porous media, as well as problems related with solid mechanics. Problem solving with the most used numerical simulation tools in the industry (Finite Elements Method). Development of eppllication examples using scientific programing languages (MATLAB and/or Python) and commercial software.

Syllabus

Introduction to numerical methods for simulation; Simulation software based on FEM. fluid flow and heat transfer simulation in porous media. Flow and transport equations. Finite element method for flow simulation in porous media: Solution for linear systems. Monophase flow; Multiphase flow. Finite element method for heat transfer in porous media. Numerical simulation applied to offshore geotechnics. The offshore environment: Marine geology and hidrodynamic regimes; Determination of marine soils properties. Finite element method for marine soils: elastic and elasto-plastic deformation. Marine soils under cyclic loads.

Prerequisites

Statics, fluid mechanics, soil and rock mechanics, programming

Cross Competence Component

Development of critical thinking and problem solving, team work, oral and writing communication. Encourage productivity and time management stablishing deadlines for the delivery of reports (10%).

Laboratorial Component

Routine development and use of commercial FEM software for simulation

Programming And Computing Component

Development of routines in computational language (e. g. MATLAB and/or Python). Use of commercial software for the simulation of the approached phenomena. The total weight of the programming and computing component will be equal to 50%.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
