Description

Objectives

At the end of the semester, the student should be able to evaluate the changes produced in the stress state and resistance of rock masses as a result of the mining works excavation. Should be able to choose the cavities geometry and the support techniques and methodologies that guaranty the stability of the rock mass where these works will be carried out.

Syllabus

Geomechanics relevance in mining exploitation project. Evaluation of rock mass quality (Geomechanical Classifications). Theoretical and numerical methods for underground excavation design (shafts, circular, elliptical and rectangular drifts and spherical cavity). Stress anisotropy.and influence of voids and discontinuities in stress state analysis. Excavation influence zone. Critical span and deflection of roof strata. Excavations in elastoplastic and non cohesive rock masses. Mining induced subsidence. Rockburts: prevention.Rock support and reinforcement: principles and design. Rock-support interaction analysis: materials and techniques. Rock masses reinforcement.

Prerequisites

Rock mechanics, Soil Mechanics,Applied Geology, Mining Exploitation Methods

Cross Competence Component

Development of critical thinking and problem solving, team work, oral and writing communication. (20%).

Programming And Computing Component

Use of commercial software for the design of safe excavations and supports.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group's work. In any assessment, every students shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every students shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
