Description

Objectives

The main objective of the optical communications systems Course Unit is to provide a modern perspective on optical telecommunications systems and study how key technologies and techniques support these systems. To present the appropriate methodologies for analyzing the performance and designing of the optical telecommunications systems

Syllabus

1. Introduction to Optical Communications Systems Optical spectrum, wavelengths and bands Basic aspects of transmission, modulation and multiplexing Landmarks in optical technology evolution Systems evolution 2. Technologies Optical fibres, optical cables and applications Semiconductor lasers Photodiodes and optical receivers Optical amplifiers 3. Single-channel systems Digital transmission and Nyquist criterion Direct and coherent detection Optical receivers for direct and coherent detection Designing systems with amplifiers chains 4. Wavelength-Division Multiplexed systems WDM concepts Devices for multiplexing Limitations of WDM systems Optical Transport Networks Channel coding Designing of optically amplified links with FECs 5. Optical access networks Conventional access network and its limitations Network architectures and PON types Installation in FTTH applications Physical layer for the GPON and EPON VLC PON dimensioning and power budget

Cross Competence Component

The laboratory component is based in the collaborative effort of students, culminating in a written report. The following skills are considered to have been developed: Teamwork (10%) and written communication (10%).

Laboratorial Component

The lab component is based on a demonstration session or field trip to locations (technical facilities or companies) relevants to the topic.

Ethical Principles

All members of a group are responsible for the group’s work In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used. In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
