Description

Objectives

  1. To make the student aware of the complexity and interdisciplinarity of the problems, challenges and conflicts that the contemporary city presents. 2) To enable the student to identify and understand the problems of the current city, its main stakeholders, its transformation strategies and subsequent consequences for the future of the cities and the population that inhabits them. 3) From this comprehensive view of the problems, to give the student a set of knowledge that develops their creative capacity in the search for alternative solutions to problem solving and constructive and effective approaches to solving urban conflicts.

Syllabus

MODULE 1: Fundamental concepts in urban planning planning and management: Spatial planning, urban planning and urban management, institutional organization (bodies and competences), urban management, governance, evaluation and monitoring. Contemporary urban challenges: gentrification, equity and urban poverty, housing, mobility / transportation and logistics, suburbanization, sustainability, adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change. MODULE 2: Stakeholders analysis tools, their values and their interests and concerns. Analysis of the main conflicts existing in the current city. Negotiation and conflict management methods to solve problems in the city.

Cross Competence Component

Development of soft skills in: Critical Thinking, namely strategic thinking about problem solving approaches; Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills (oral, organizational and teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, self- motivation); and Information and media literacy (ability to locate and access information, as well as to analyze and evaluate media content). The assessment percentage associated with these skills should be around 20%
